RENT VS MORALS;
January 20, 2010
Although as previously stated the pieces do sound different due to their different backgrounds and instruments. However the pieces can be related as well.
In both pieces there are repeated themes that are played. In Rent the lyrics: "No day but today" are repeated and are even included in the round when the female parts (soprano and alto) spilt up singing along with the males (baritone and bass.) The female parts sing : without you. The males sing: No other way.
The most remembered part is when the upper voices sing: "I die without you." Where the lower voices sing: "No day but today." Since those are the two major themes in the piece and throughout the play in general.
This round takes place during the time frame of: 1:30 and continues until the end of the piece at 2:06 where all the voices harmonize to say "No day but Today."
When looking at Morales they also repeat themes, however their pieces do not have lyrics. For example in the beginning at 1:01 where they start the theme using drums and marimbas. This theme is later displayed at 5:48, except the only difference is there is a ritunalla and crescendos in the piece.

You can hear that the pieces are coming to an end.
However in Rent the end is a strong finish with all voices singing.
Where in Morales there is a reoccurrence of what was heard in the first 30 seconds of the wooden blocks on the floor.
We can determine that Rent is coming to the end by the strong lyrics, crescendo as well as the unity of all four voices. We can also determine that Morales is also coming to an end by the heightened drama and the ritunalla at 7:00.
